If you want to look at it objectively, use the BCS computer rankings:
http://www.bcsfootball.org/bcsfb/rankings - they all have different
systems, but putting them together tells a tale worth looking at.

1) Sagarin: http://www.usatoday.com/sports/sagarin/fbc06.htm
Pac 10, SEC, Big East, Big Ten, ACC, Big XII.

2) Anderson & Hester: http://andersonsports.com/football/ACF_frnk.html
Pac-10, Big East, SEC, Big Ten, ACC, Big XII

3) Billingsley: http://www.cfrc.com/Ratings_2006/CC_WK_13.htm
Big Ten, Big East, SEC, Pac-10, ACC, Big XII

4) Colley: http://www.colleyrankings.com/curconf.html
Big East, Big Ten, SEC, Pac-10, ACC, Big XII

5) Massey: http://www.masseyratings.com/rate.php?lg=cf#conf
Pac-10, SEC, Big East, Big Ten, ACC, Big XII

6) Wolfe: http://prwolfe.bol.ucla.edu/cfootball/ratings.htm
Big East, Pac-10, SEC, Big Ten, ACC, Big XII

Giving six points for a first place finish, five for a second place
finish, etc., this is the combined result:

1. Pac-10: 29 points (3 first place finishes)
2. Big East: 26 points (2 first place finishes)
3. SEC: 26 points
4. Big Ten: 23 points (1 first-place finishes)
5. ACC: 10 points
6. Big XII: 5 points

Not sure how much more objective you can get. The Pac-10 is the
consensus best conference in the country this year.

Or Massey and Wolfe?

If you want to look at it objectively,
any system that has the big yeast ranked higher than 3rd is, ipso fatso,
a silly system.

the big east's best ooc win is vs. maryland. that's pathetic.

any conference in which rutgers can enter the last game of the year
controlling their own destiny in terms of the automatic bcs bid(if they
beat SU this week), is by definition a bad conference.

there are no objective opinions. every formula is some wackjob's
subjective opinion about what it means to be a good conference.

now if you can come up with one that that can justify rating in the top
2 a conference whose best OOC win is over maryland, i'll buy what you're
selling.

See, Jaros, that's what *you* do best/worst. You make up your mind on
something, and then go on a blind hunt only for evidence that supports
what you think -- thereby ignoring the truth in the process because you
insist on clinging to your own narrow-minded ideas and only looking for
evidence to support that.

This is exactly what you're known for. Keep it up, Esteban, mail order
doctorate and all.

So the ultimate evidence as to whether a *team* is good ("what is
their out-of-conference schedule like?") doesn't apply to conferences
as a whole?

SEC is still the toughest conference! They beat each other up!

Just to revisit this topic:

Three of the BCS computers had the Pac-10 as the #1 overall conference;
one of them had the Big Ten, one of them had the Big East, and one of
them had the SEC. However ... the SEC finished second in five ratings
systems.

Generally, there is no consensus whatsoever here, and to arbitrarily
declare the Pac-10 or the SEC as "the best" conference is completely a
subjective interpretation of the data.

To wit:

1) Sagarin: http://www.usatoday.com/sports/sagarin/fbc06.htm
Rank: Pac 10, SEC, Big East, Big Ten, Big XII, ACC.

2) Anderson & Hester: http://andersonsports.com/football/ACF_frnk.html
Rank: Pac-10, SEC, Big East, Big Ten, Big XII, ACC.

3) Billingsley: http://www.cfrc.com/Ratings_2006/CC_WK_15.htm
Rank: Big Ten, SEC, Big East, Pac-10, Big XII, ACC.

4) Colley: http://www.colleyrankings.com/curconf.html
Rank: Big East, SEC, Big Ten, Pac-10, Big XII, ACC.

5) Massey: http://www.masseyratings.com/rate.php?lg=cf#conf
Rank: Pac-10, SEC, Big East, Big Ten, ACC, Big XII.

6) Wolfe: http://prwolfe.bol.ucla.edu/cfootball/ratings.htm
Rank: SEC, Pac-10, Big East, Big Ten, ACC, Big XII.

Total points based on rankings above:

1. SEC -- 31 points (1 first-place vote)
2. Pac-10 -- 29 points (3)
3. Big East -- 26 points (1)
4. Big Ten -- 22 points (1)
5. Big XII -- 10 points
6. ACC -- 8 points

The SEC is first and most consistently ranked, yet it was only
top-rated by one BCS computer. The Pac-10 was ranked first by three BCS
computers, but was also fourth in two others.

Percentage-wise, who got the highest ratings?

Billingsley should be tossed. The B-televen has two good teams, one
vastly overrated mediocre team and, after that, the B12 North light.
Any rating system that has the B10 as better than third behind the
SEC and Pac10 is a proven bust.
