I play college basketball, and their is a distinct difference in
the coaching styles of my high school basketball coach and my college
basketball coach. At the college level there is a lot more pressure
to perform your best, and from my experience the coaches have a much
shorter tolerance level for error. I have come to notice that my
style of play has become more reserved in fear of making a mistake. I
would like to get feedback on how others view style of coaching and
its relationship with the performance and emotional well being of
their players. Should the coach be the one to change their coaching
style to benfefit the players, or should the players adapt to the
coaching style?

Players need to adapt to the coach. I have seen very few coaches who
"over-push" the buttons. Most players I have talked to all say something
similar. "When I came in the coach rode me and I thought I knew better, but
when I finally bought in, my game went to a new level." You never hear that
from players who were babied. How many players can you name that did not
have a strong work ethic and were cry babies who are among the best in their
sports? A few perhaps, but most of the starts either have a hard work ethic
or were rode by coaches to improve themselves. If you want to play
competitive and be the best you can be, try buying into what the coach is
having you do. If not, try Div. III or NAIA and enjoy the game more and
don't worry as much about the competition.

I understand the hesitation factor, but I imagine what your coach calls a
mistake is lack of hustle or a mental error, not just simply missing a shot
(unless it is a bad shot selection!). Do you hustle? How often do you dive
on the floor during practice? Remember, practice doesn't make perfect,
perfect practice makes perfect. Do you watch film of past years teams to
try to "see" the offense and defensive sets in your sleep (so to speak)?
Have you talked to the coach (or an assistant) to see what they might
recommend. Have you let the coach see you staying after practice to
practice a deficiency, or come early to do the same? Just some thoughts that
could make a difference.

Good luck!
